Our 5 Star Award Jazz Trumpet practice App

 .    9514-logo-mzl-ymuioglf

An amazing sounding, easy to use music app. This app thoroughly deserves a 5 star Certification and Educational App Store Recommended status.

Teacher Review

Too many apps nowadays look great, with a host of unnecessary features, full social media options, and yet the actual content leaves a lot to be lacking. This app is the exact opposite of that. There are no silly distractions, as none are really needed because the quality of the concept and execution are brilliant.

As you may have guessed from the title, this is an app for aspiring trumpeters. When you load up the home screen you are presented with a selection of 3 songs. When you click on the songs you can see the sheet music and all you have to do is press play to get started. By far the most impressive thing about this app is the quality of the recordings. All the songs have been recorded live and the playing and sound quality is top notch.

The way it works is, the song plays with a beat counter that scrolls along the sheet music as the relevant portion of the song is being played. Then the user has the choice of playing along with the all the instruments, or taking out the Trumpet to play along with just the backing track. You can also remove the other instruments as well as the bar counter.

It’s this flexibility that really makes this a powerful tool. You also have the option to slow the song down in 10 bpm (beats per minute) increments. You can make the songs up to 40 bpm’s slower and it doesn’t have too much of an effect on the sound quality. Lastly, you can loop any section of the song, so if there’s one particular bit that you’re stuck on, you can slow it down and keep it on a loop until you get it right.

And that’s it – Simple, but highly effective. This setup is clearly the future of musical training. The next stages for the app are just to build on the amount of songs. For what it is, this app is perfect, but we’d love to see at some point, the addition of some theory lessons and possibly some tutorial videos, so a novice could learn to play using this app alone.

Overall we’re thoroughly impressed and would highly recommend the app for use in the classroom or at home.

From the Developer

etoapps has added a new dimension to the Dallas School of Music dlp Jazz Books.

The app gives music students an incredible practice tool by allowing almost complete control of the playback on dlp’s backing tracks- including the melody only tracks.

The eto folks have done a great job of giving learners the ability to control their practice routines and practise at their own pace, working gradually up to each performance tempo.

The new app also allows users to isolate and even loop any trouble areas of a song and that makes music practice much more fun and productive.

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/jazz-trumpet-level-1-dlp-bits/id860204058?mt=8

The app’s music basis is the tried, tested and well respected playalong material of the Dallas Music School (dlp) Jazz Book series; Trumpet Level 1.

This app contains the three Bits and Pieces songs with each version having its own variation of the melody and different backing track. A full, real live jazz combo is there with which you can practice and play 24/7.

The first, Bits and Pieces 1, has a range of notes from D to B (trumpet pitch) and is a really cool melody with swing 8s.

Bits and Pieces 2 pushes you to play E to D (trumpet pitch) with a more rhythmically sophisticated melody in a Latin feel with straight 8s.

The third Bits and Pieces 3, has a Latin straight 8 feel first time through and a cool swing second time. The note range is the same as Bits and Pieces 2 but you are extended because there is a more chromatic flavour to the new melody….introducing you to to some sharps and flats.

Don’t worry …as was at the beginning you can slow up the melody and the backing track, isolate difficult sections and work at your own pace…with or without the melody playing, with or without the accompaniment playing.

Solo from So What – Miles Davis

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/so-what-trumpet-solo-learn/id992478193?mt=8

There are many practice facilities in this app that can be customised to suite individual needs. Of particular value are the ability to slow down the solo and the rhythm section accompaniment without losing quality and the real time Beat Counter which shows where you are in the bar.

The sound of the trumpet is not Miles. A trumpet sample has been used. This makes sure that there is no loss of quality at the slower speeds. This will help you keep in tune and hit the right notes.

The balance of the trumpet sound to the band is such that you can hear the solo as you are practising. When you are ready you can switch off the trumpet sound.

Miles plays at 135bpm. You can start practising at 60 and you can build up by 10bpm bar by bar, phrase by phrase, with or without the sound of the trumpet or rhythm section.

Practise so that you can play the correct notes, perfectly in tune and in time. THEN you can imitate the note bends and half valve techniques that Miles uses. You also will be building up a bank of phrases that you can use in your own solo playing. Copying and studying the greats of the past is an ideal way of learning and gaining the confidence to develop your own style.

Eto Music Practice offer this app as a practice tool; a means to an end. The aim is that you practise efficiently and improve quickly. This will result in you being better prepared to enjoy performing with fellow musicians.

Flipped Learning

Hashtags: #FlipClass, #FlippedClassroom, #FlippedLearning, and #Flipped

We are all familiar with severe budget cuts in schools and community funding. This has mostly hit the Arts and Music sectors very hard.

The cost of private tuition in the meantime has had to keep pace with inflation and could prove too costly for many parents to maintain a regular weekly schedule.

One of the main key issues that the eto music practice player and content tries to address is that Learners can indeed practice in their own time. The #etomusicplayer provides valuable notation learning as well as a unique Beat Counter and the ability to control the practice tempi.

Many tutors will be familiar with their students attending each lesson just to practice, having not done so between each lesson. Our aim is to provide music practice that is accurate, professional but above all FUN !! Thus the student is progressing with each lesson and not just practising.

Eto works with musicians, schools, music publishers and Youth Bands and Orchestras to produce content that is suitable for their experience levels and requirements. We also produce vocal choir practice for individual clients.

The Eto music player is available for Desktop, tablet and phone versions across android and Apple ranges.

The current iTunes range of Eto’s own range is now being used in some 35 countries globally.

Flipping the Classroom originally a teaching approach that entails having students listen to online lectures at home so they can prepare for an upcoming lesson in which they implement their new knowledge through activities and discussions — that is, what would be homework in a typical classroom setup — at school.

Traditionally, flipped instruction meant teachers recorded lectures and students engaged with them at their own pace as homework.

Now with Eto we hope all music students of all levels and ages will benefit from our unique practice methods.

What is a hashtag?

A word or phrase preceded by a “#.”

How do hashtags work?

Twitter can be a busy place with lots of tweets–and thus lots of “noise.”

A #hashtag is a way to aggregate tweets that are appended with a hashtag. Picture it like a magnet that attracts all messages categorized by that topical word or phrase.

Who can use hashtags?

Anyone. When you tweet and want your message to be part of a larger conversation beyond just your own existing  followers, add a relevant hashtag from the lists below to the end of your message, and you’ll automatically reach anyone who is monitoring the same hashtag. Cool, yes?

What else do I need to know?

  • Don’t hashtag spam–if your tweet doesn’t add to that hashtag’s topic, discussion, or user base, don’t add the hashtag.
  • Use more than one hashtag if it applies to more than one topic, but choose wisely. If you want that hashtag’s community to value your input, take care to keep that twitter stream nice, tidy, and free from “visual debris.”
  • For Example add : #musiced #school #choir #songs

Meeting Times

Many of the hashtags have “meeting times” where educators agree to “meet and tweet”–that is, send out messages on a topic at a certain time on a certain day.

Twitter and Facebook can be like ‘Rolling News’. Not even your own Followers will be looking at you just when you send out your posting. So, make sure you post at the times each day they are mostly to be seen ( say, lunchtime or early evening ) and if suitable, to a group chat time as found with the different weekly #hashtag groups that you are interested in.

Use a free Robot such as Socialoomph to pre programme your postings during the day/night and if you are talking to groups/schools for example in different time zones, then at the best premium time for the posts to be seen in their country/Time Zone.

If you do participate at the agreed upon time, you’ll see the tweets stream in live and participate in said conversation (via twitter) in what is nearly real-time. But if you can’t make it, the great part about a hashtag is that it does the sorting for you. You can search for messages assigned to a given hashtag anytime–tomorrow, Sunday night, or during your planning period next week.

Note, this list of hashtags will be updated periodically, including reorganization, and functional linking on all hashtags.

There is nothing more serious than having fun!

Many would feel that if you’re having fun, enjoying yourself, the value of whatever you are doing is diluted.

Of course this is not true…and eto Music Practice does everything it can to make sure that practising with their Apps is always enjoyable.

We believe that the more enjoyable practice can become the more you will want to practise.

The more you practise the more you will improve.

Here are some of the ways in which practice is enjoyable with eto Music Practice:

The recorded sound of the music to be practised ‘keeps you company’ as well as keeping you in time and in tune. You have to listen …which engages you and time flies.

Accompaniments are there for you 24/7. You are practising with others.

being able to slowdown the sound of the solo part and accompaniment makes practise enjoyable even when you need to repeat difficult sections at the slower tempo. In other words you are performing as you practise.

There are eto Music Practice Apps available for Desktop, IPad and Android.

Teachers……

A whole class can also be taught in front of an Interactive Whiteboard in the Classroom.

Smaller groups or individuals can practise in front of a single computer at their own pace. Tell your pupils to Register and they can practise at home.

Parents: Really useful computer activity. Start on the Recorder, learn to read music in preparation for learning other instruments. What a start!

The first tune B Happy introduces one note and has, like all the other tunes, an exciting accompaniment. New notes are introduced in tunes that follow

‘Pupils will learn and improve more quickly because they’ll want to practise more.

Each tune can be practised with or without a full accompaniment.

The sound of the Recorder can be heard which helps with keeping in tune and playing the correct rhythm.

A Real Time Beat Counter appears above the music notation to act as a conductor and helps with the timing of each note

Each tune can be practised at slower speeds.

Start and End bars can be chosen so that each tune can be practised bar by bar, section by section.

The speed of practise can be increased until the whole piece can be played perfectly. This is a video of Alis on her second lesson as you can see she is enjoying what she has achieved in just two lessons. The next step for her is to practise at home getting to the right tempo and in the next lesson she will move on to the next tune.

Making Practise Fun !

accompaniments are there for you 24/7. You are practising with others.

being able to slowdown the sound of the solo part and accompaniment makes practise enjoyable even when you need to repeat difficult sections at the slower tempo. In other words you are performing as you practise.

Of course there are some who have been blessed with natural gifts BUT with practice anybody can raise the standard of their playing. Without practice there would be NO improvement however natural your gifts.

This is why eto Music Practice is committed to making you WANT to practise…….making your practice sessions as efficient and enjoyable as possible.

I read the phrase of this blog’s title in book The Practice of Practice by Jonathan Harnum………well worth a read.

‘The more I practice, the luckier I get,’ is a well known phrase attributed to Arnold Palmer or Gary Player the golfers…and many more:)

If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it would not seem so wonderful at all.

“I really feel that if you’re gonna be good, you gotta practice… Practice whatever the hell you do.”

― Ray Charles

Be encouraged….but perhaps they are being a little modest:

“What I have achieved by industry and practice, anyone else with tolerable natural gift and ability can also achieve.”

― Johann Sebastian Bach

We at eto Music Practice are committed to making your practice sessions as enjoyable and efficient as possible…so that you will WANT to practise more and more. Whether you use a Tablet or Desktop .
